- A new Macintosh virus has been found. Some files recently uploaded to
- the Info-Mac archives at sumex-aim were infected. The files that we know about
- are "game/obnoxious-tetris.hqx" and "game/ten-tile-puzzle.hqx". This is
- the first time that a virus has ever been found in the sumex archives (to
- my knowledge).
- The virus was found quickly due to some integrity-checking code in Claris
- applications. If you have a Claris application and are infected, the
- application may refuse to run, warning of a modification. Claris deserves
- praise for taking this defensive stance with regards to viruses.
- I do not believe that Disinfectant 2.5.1 or GateKeeper are effective against
- this virus or provide warnings of its presence.
- If you downloaded these files or any new files from the archive over the
- past week or so, be extremely careful. When a new version of Disinfectant
- is released, we will make it immediately available. *Ftp access to sumex
- will not be available until then*.
- I have enclosed the note from John Norstad about this virus. His statements
- are preliminary and should not be viewed as the Last Word about this
- virus.

- VIRUS ALERT!
- A new Macintosh virus named "MBDF" has been discovered. It was sent to me
- by a professor in Wales yesterday. We (a worldwide virus research group of
- which I am a part) have completely analyzed it, and it is NOT malicious. It
- does not intentionally do any damage, and it does not even do anything
- innocuous like beep. It only spreads.
- Unfortunately, about 30 minutes ago we discovered that several games in the
- anonymous FTP archives at sumex-aim.stanford.edu are infected, and in fact
- that is how the professor in Wales became infected. I know for cetain that
- both "Obnoxious Tetris" and "Ten Tile Puzzle" are infected. It is very
- likely that other files at sumex are also infected.
- We very strongly recommend that you DO NOT get any files from sumex-aim
- until the moderators at Stanford have had an opportunity to check their
- archives and remove any infected files.
- If you have downloaded any files from Sumex recently, especially games,
- please do not use them or give copies of any of them to anyone else until
- you get a chance to make certain they are not infected.
- I am working on a new version of Disinfectant to recognize this virus. The
- current version 2.5.1 does not recognize it.
- The new version 2.6 of Disinfectant will most likely be released tonight or
- tomorrow.
